Kindergarten (ages 5-6)The Kindergarten focuses on the "Three R's" (Reverence, Rhythm and Repetition) to give the children a sense of security and meet their need to imitate and participate wholeheartedly in the life around them. The day includes plenty of time for imaginative play with simple, open-ended toys made from natural materials. The children are engaged body, mind and spirit with fairy tales that are told and retold with puppets or dramatization, and with songs, finger plays and movement games. The teacher provides examples of real work for imitation, such as preparing food for snacks or doing handwork such as fingerknitting and sewing. The children also do watercolor painting and work with beeswax modeling clay and beeswax crayons. The class finishes the day playing outdoors. Seven and eight year oldsThe seven year old class is working on the main lesson block of Fairy Tales and Nature Stories. In Waldorf Education, main lesson blocks constitute the major portion of the day. The teacher tells a story and then the children create artwork (watercolor painting, crayon drawing or beeswax modeling), based upon the story to deepen their understanding of the story. Other daily activities include singing, recorder playing, movement games, form drawing and handwork. Nine and ten year old classThis class is working on the Main Lesson Blocks of Third and Fourth Grade-Stories of the Old Testament and Norse Myths. The children will illustrate their lesson books, water-color paint and do beeswax modelling. They'll also do form drawing, sing, play recorders and knit. This year they are working with the older class on large group dances. Ten and eleven year old classThis class is studying culture and myths of Ancient Greece. They write story synopses in Main Lesson Books, illustrating these in colored pencil to deepen their understanding of the stories. The class paints with watercolor, sings, and plays recorder. They play movement games, listen to and recite poetry, sculpt with clay and do projects with knitting and cross-stitch. Form drawing is practiced as an integration of the artistic soul and emerging intellect. In the spring they will perform a play inspired by the Greek myths. |
